Merrilee Cleveland: Metal Muse

by Danny Epperson

Merrilee Cleveland's life as an artist, a wife, and a mother in Williamsburg isn't the typical juggling act you'd expect for someone with these roles.  As a bronze sculpture, it can already be a challenging work in many ways--mainly the extreme fiery conditions and the very nature of the once-molten metal artwork. But just as she uses transformation as a theme in many of her works of bronze, she also sees these changes in her own life and finds her balance to make the tough situations the best they can be, for herself and for her family. In this story, we follow Merrilee to a foundry at the Fine Arts Center of East Carolina University to witness the birth of her latest series of works, "The Cosmo Dancers."
