Submission Policy - Writers and Artists

by WHRO | The Scene

Submitting Content to The Scene

If you are a writer or photographer and would like to conduct an interview, write an article or photograph an event in Hampton Roads for inclusion on The Scene website, and you think it fits our flavor, please write This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Include “blog submission” in the subject line. Links only, no attachments. Artists who want to get their work seen or who hope to ‘trade’ work for getting their work published need not apply. Instead, see our Submissions for Artists as Features guidelines below.

Examples of what not to do: Fail to include what we asked for in the subject line, attach files, fail to introduce yourself {“yo, ‘sup”!} doesn’t count, fail to provide links to samples. Why? Because we expect writers to be thorough, mature and able to read directions for starters.

So, what should you write about? Here are some ideas:

  • A favorite artist who won’t write about themselves
  • A review of a recent show in Hampton Roads
  • If you are an artist - give some tips for artist who are trying to break into The Scene
  • The art you’d like to see in Hampton Roads, but for some reason just isn’t here
  • Pretty much anything to do with visual art, performing art, music, street art, pretty things, music and shows in Hampton Roads
  • If you are unsure of a topic is appropriate, or if you want any feedback or suggestions, please feel free to contact us.  Regardless of what you write about, keep everything positive and upbeat.

So, what should you not write about? Here are some ideas:

  • Advocate/op ed pieces, especially on controversial topics
  • Advertisements/advertorials

So, what are the guidelines? Here are some key things to keep in mind:

  • Your blog post must be your own work. It is fine if you have previously published it elsewhere. If you use a photo that is not one that you took, make sure you have express consent to use, and include a photo credit with your submission
  • Any other materials in your blog post that are not yours should be acknowledged and include a hyperlink if available online
  • You will be credited with your work with a bio line and link to your business/blog and, from time-to-time receive promotional offerings, but not monetary compensation. Your work may be promoted in other venues on WHRO
  • Photos are preferred in .jpeg format and should be the highest resolution possible (1270 pixels in width)
  • The length of blog posts depends on the topic, but generally posts should be at a minimum 100-250 words in length and 750-1000 words a maximum
