Jackson LeBeau

by Harrison Bounds

Artist/Band name:  Jackson LeBeau (or Jackson LeBeau & Co)

What are your musical influences? Tom Petty, Paul Simon, Counting Crows, Augustana, Civil Wars, Passenger, The Head & The Heart

What are your aspirations? Live “comfortably” off of our music!

How would you describe your music to somebody who has never heard you before? Harmony-laced folk pop.

What’s the hardest part about being a musician? What’s the easiest part?

CJ: The hardest part for me is having two jobs. Easiest: Drinking on the job.

Jackson: The hardest part is the part of the job that requires us to talk numbers with venues and booking agents/clients. It’s something I know has to be done, but it always feels like we’re walking the fine line between getting screwed over and taking advantage of someone. The easiest part is everything else. Writing, arranging, recording, performing, even rehearsing. I love it all!

Suzy: The hardest part about being a musician (for me) is when people measure your success by whether or not you're signed, on the radio, etc., when it ought to about whether you're passionate about the music you make. The easiest part is performing because all the REALLY hard work is happening midweek/behind the scenes or prior to the show. Performing is when I get to just enjoy making music.

Do you have any negative experiences at a show or embarrassing moments as a musician? We’ve had the power go out on us a few times, the show gets real acoustic, real quick.

Do you have any advice to people just starting out as musicians? The hang is almost as important as the musical talent. You have to really love your band members.Or you can just be related to them, then they’re stuck with you.

What’s your favorite part of playing a show?

CJ: When people who weren’t originally engaged, start paying attention.

Jackson: My favorite is when listeners start singing along to songs I’ve written. It feels surreal, like I’ve beaten the system.

Suzy: My favorite part of playing a show is all of it! There's not a part of it I don't love. I love getting to sing and dance, though I guess if I have to choose, my favorite part of playing a Jackson LeBeau show is singing "Hold On To Me". Best song ever.

Tell us something interesting about yourself aside from musical abilities.

Jackson: I can do 11 pushups, while in a handstand.

Suzy: I'm in the middle of writing my first book! I hope to have it finished by next spring.

Do you come from a musical family?

Jackson:Yes! Of six family members, my father is the only one who isn’t musical, but he makes one hell of a roadie.

Suzy: Yes, my father and mother sing as do both of my sisters.

Where would you like to be in five years as a musician? Supporting ourselves off of our music.

How long have you been playing?

CJ: 8 years

Jackson: 8 years playing guitar, I’ve only been singing for 4 of them.

Suzy: Since I was around 3 or 4 years old.

What’s the best concert you have ever seen?

CJ: Grace Potter in Mobile, Alabama.

Jackson: The Counting Crows/Augustana(Traveling Circus & Medicine Show)

Suzy: Heart. Ann Wilson is in her sixties and she still kills it!

Give us some insight into your songwriting process, do you like to collaborate or mostly write songs individually?

I generally write the lyrics on my own, but the music/harmonies are always in collaboration.

What can you say about the “power of music”?It offers an understood sense of community. We all love what we do, and so we’re just happy to “go to work”.

Why is music important?

Jackson: Music is important because people can relate to it. They can relate to each other because of it. If it’s a happy song, people can be happy together. If it’s a sad song, people can feel like they’re not alone in what they’re going through. Either way, you share that particular moment with people who feel it too.

CJ: Because none of us can dance

Suzy: Because music is how a lot of people find common ground with one another. I may not see eye to eye with someone, but if we're both fans of Thrice at least we have that going for us.

What makes you want to be a musician?

CJ: It’s pretty simple. Playing music is the most fun I’ve ever had.

Suzy: I love it too much to ever stop! It's become an "I have to" more than an "I want to".

Jackson: I agree with Suzy. It doesn’t feel like it’s a matter of whether or not I want it. It’s just what we are.
