Teamwork makes the Scene work…

by Kendrick Hopkins

With an army of RBLE fitteds bouncing on every downbeat, the feeling of camaraderie hit you faster than the exhaled vapors at FM Backstage in downtown Norfolk this past Friday night.

This ongoing monthly put on by RBLE mastermind, Max Rebel, flawlessly interweaves two of the Hampton Roads strongest attributes: its arts & hip hop scenes.

Upstairs, some of the area’s brightest talents moved original prints, one offs, and more. Mallory Jarrell provided her digital interpretation on masterpieces, Christopher Revel showed off his famed illustrations and Vivian Rose’s work set a cosmic undertone that drifted through the building all night.

Downstairs, the energy picked up as emcees fed off the spirited crowd of supporters to harness sets fit for any stage. The bill was headlined by local showman, Ced Hughes, who ran through a slew of songs, both old & new. The audience erupted when Max, songstress, Sunny & more, accompanied him throughout his set. Another highlight was Rose Marie Ann, whose cool demeanor paved the way for her thought provoking lyricism & pedigree stage presence. The ACC set out to represent the peninsula, and did just that, while Jesse Evans exhibited his polished songwriting.

It was inspiring to see such an enthusiastic group of like-minded creatives cohabitating under roof, all for the same goal: To create awareness, not only for the individual artists, but also for the Hampton Roads, as a whole. Make sure you check out next month’s event, scheduled for Saturday, August 23rd at FM Backstage (formerly the Jewish Mother on Granby St in downtown Norfolk). There will be more of your favorite local hip hop acts & artists for you to discover.
