Public Art Project Just for Students

by Shannon Bowman

Yellow Cab of Hampton is hoping to see some of the area's finest work from local students enrolled in colleges across Hampton Roads. The group hopes this campaign will enhance the look of the building, which sits in the middle of the burgeoning arts district in Hampton. As corporate sponsors of the Virginia Arts Festival, and participants in the City of Norfolk Beautification grant, spokeman for Yellow Cab Franks Azzalina states that, "we are local folks who are involved in the community and we want to give art students a shot and see what they can do."

Any college student over the age of 18 who is enrolled full time for the spring semester at a post-secondary school that has its primary location in Hampton Roads (Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Suffolk), and is enrolled in an art or graphic design course can submit. Once a winner is selected, local muralist John P. Hickey, will be painting the design on the wall.

Yellow Cab will select up to 10 entries for public vote on March 14. Entries will be posted here for voting through midnight on March 20. From the three who receive the most votes, Yellow Cab shall determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners and award the prizes during a special event on March 26, 2016.

To enter the Contest, participants must:

1)   Create artwork using the template provided to reflect the color(s) and design of the mural.

2)   Prominently display the phrase “YELLOW CAB” and/or prominently depict one or more taxicabs in the artwork.

3)   Submit the artwork as instructed.

4)   Include their name, phone number, email address, school name, and the name of the course’s instructor.
